For Jason Momoa, he’s got the unique opportunity to play a live-action version of Aquaman on the big screen. While a version of the character was done in Smallville on the WB/CW, it wasn’t as true to the comics nature as Momoa’s will be. And though he will be debuting in Justice League first, his solo film won’t be too far behind, and furthermore, it will stick to the main struggle Aquaman faces, that he’s an outsider.
“The guy was never really accepted on land, and he was never really accepted in Atlantis,” Momoa said in an interview with GQ. “He’s a half-breed. But he’s the best of both worlds. He just doesn’t know how to handle his powers. So it’s kind of a coming of age for a young man to a man, or a man to a king. He’s lost a lot of things and he’s got to cope. He’s an outsider.”
As noted before, this will be the first movie live-action version of Aquaman, and Momoa is all for that:
“We’ve never really seen anything from this guy before, so it’s fun to have a level playing field,” Momoa said. “There aren’t like four Aquamans before me. I get to set the tone for it.”
The solo Aquaman film is set for 2018, while Justice League is coming out later this year.
