Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Preview
The demo presentation offered a good look at the stealth gameplay at infiltrating the enemy base. After spending a good portion of time taking out guards and sneaking around the base, Big Boss finds some important intel on where to find Kaz Miller. However, Big Boss is found and he calls in an air strike on the base to blow it to hell. At this point, Big Boss has to get out of Dodge before he can be picked up. The next part of the demo showcased Mother Base, hub of the Diamond Dog mercenaries in the game. Mother Base is a highly elaborate ocean rig base that’s reminiscent of Big Shell from Metal Gear Solid II: Sons of Liberty. The developers expressed how players can build up and customize the base with the money, assets, and raw materials you collect from your missions. The sheep that Big Boss used earlier on the Fulton recovery system even shows up at the base. Revolver Ocelot can be seen wandering around there. This part of the demo highlighted the game’s dynamic weather changes and rain. Before the end of the demo, the base is under attack .
While I have generally grown more detached from the Metal Gear Solid franchise with each passing installment, this does look like an impressive and immersive title. Based on the previous events and horrors he’s had to witness, it is no surprise that Big Boss eventually went down the path he did and became Solid Snake’s enemy. We definitely appear to be getting to that point with this game. However, the technology that’s available in the 1980s is quite anachronistic, even for a franchise such as this. I like the idea of being able to play in a huge, open-world sandbox for the Metal Gear Solid franchise, as well as the cool HQ like Mother Base. I really hope to see young Solid Snake and Liquid Snake show up at some point in this game. Unfortunately, the demo did not provide a look at the game’s online components or multiplayer mode. Metal Gear Solid V will be available on the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. The release date will be announced at a later date.
