We were told we would see nothing from the promised DC Gunnverse at SDCC, mainly because there was too much construction going on behind the scenes to allow for any previews. That’s been mostly true so far — except in one case. The promised cartoon that falls under the Gunnverse, Creature Commandos, premiered a surprise trailer during a DC panel.
The Creature Commandos are an elite team who are secretly working for the government, taking on dangerous missions they deem too dangerous for humans…but not for monsters. Monsters like Dr. Phosphorous, the glowing skeleton man who resembles Blight from Batman Beyond (yet isn’t). Weasel, whom you might remember from Gunn’s Suicide Squad movie. Steandfast tin soldier GI Robot, and fish out of water Nina Mazursky. Both Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein are part of the team, and before you yell at me, this time “Frankenstein” is really his name (his full name is “Eric Frankenstein”).
And if you had to guess, who do you think is behind the formation of this monstrous team? I’d like to know who at DC is such a huge fan of Amanda Waller and why, because in the last few years she’s been in ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING multimedia has to offer from this company. She’s been in Suicide Squad movies and video games and she’s been in things the Suicide Squad has little to do with. She’s had a big presence in the existing seasons of My Adventures With Superman. She’s doing the boogie dance in the credits of the Max anime Suicide Squad Isekai, and currently in the actual comics, she has achieved literal domination of the world, replacing our heroes with obedient super-bots.
Amanda Waller doesn’t have the level of icon-ness fellow villain Lex Luthor has, now does she have the flair of The Joker. Waller just kinda stands there, frowns and points at other villains to do her work for her. Only her plot armor keeps her alive in a world of superheroes who could easily beat her up at any time. What’s the big deal?
Anyway, you didn’t come here for this, you came for the Creature Commandos. They’re voiced by Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, and Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky. Sean Gunn, who voiced Weasel in The Suicide Squad AND IS JAMES GUNN‘S BROTHER (whooaaaaaa) reprises the role here, as well as GI Robot.
