Mayfair Games Shuts Down, Sells Properties To Asmodee
Mayfair Games, longtime publisher of tabletop activities, is closing its doors. Mayfair was one of the veteran RPG companies, having been in the business for 36 years. They’ve been watching the tabletop industry grow from the beginning, but this is the end.
Mayfair is most famous for publishing the popular Settlers Of Catan game. Now that they’re out of business, who will get it? Asmodee North America, a large (and still growing) business that has been sold all of Mayfair’s remaining brands and properties.
“As of today, the management team at Mayfair Games, Inc. announces we will wind down game publishing,” a Mayfair representative said in a statement. “After 36 years, this was not an easy decision or one we took lightly, but it was necessary. Once we had come to this conclusion, we knew we had to find a good home for our games which is when we reached out to Asmodee.”
Thanks to aggressive acquisition activity in recent years, Asmodee owned a ton of properties even before they had Catan: 7 Wonders, Dead of Winter, Dixit, Splendor, Star Wars: The X-Wing Miniatures Game, Pandemic and Ticket to Ride are all under their label. The most intriguing thing about this latest acquirement is that Asmodee also produces digital versions of many of their games. Could a Catan app be in our future?
