Back in the 1990s when the speculator bubble burst and comics sales were sagging, Marvel and DC came up with the idea to go 50/50 on a massive, inter-company-wide crossover event that would see the two rival universes merge for the first time. The Amalgam Age was the result, showing off a blending of heroes like Dark Claw (Batman and Wolverine), Super Soldier (Superman and Captain America) and Iron Lantern (it’s obvious).
Given that the two companies, today, could not be further apart (Marvel is with Disney, DC is with Warner Bros) any reprint of these comics sounded impossible. But then someone got the idea to honor George Perez in the final months of his life by reprinting his JLA/Avengers miniseries (I could swear I wrote about this, but it doesn’t appear to be in the archive. Mandela Effect strikes again). Neither company could say no because…how heartless would they have to be?
Since there was no time to produce much of a print run while Perez was still alive, copies were extremely limited and demand shot through the roof. That appears to have pushed Marvel and DC to shake hands again and produce a new omnibus collection of the Amalgam run….and, while they’re at it, a second omnibus containing every other Marvel / DC crossover ever written from 1976 to 2009.
DC/Marvel: The Amalgam Age Omnibus contains: DC Versus Marvel #1-4, DC/Marvel: All Access #1-4, Unlimited Access #1-4, Bat-Thing #1, Bruce Wayne: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #1, Bullets and Bracelets #1, Challengers of the Fantastic #1, Doctor Strangefate #1, Iron Lantern #1, Legends of the Dark Claw #1, Lobo the Duck #1, Speed Demon #1, Spider-Boy #1, Super Soldier #1, Thorion of the New Asgods #1, and X-Patrol #1.
DC Versus Marvel Omnibus contains: Batman/Captain America #1, Batman/Daredevil #1, Batman/Punisher: Lake of Fire #1, Batman/Spider-Man #1, Daredevil/Batman #1, DC Special Series #27, Darkseid vs. Galactus: The Hunger #1, Green Lantern/Silver Surfer: Unholy Alliances #1, Incredible Hulk vs. Superman #1, Marvel and DC Present Featuring the Uncanny X-Men and the New Teen Titans #1, Marvel Treasury Edition #28, Punisher/Batman: Deadly Knights #1, Silver Surfer/Superman #1, Spider-Man and Batman #1, Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man #1, and Superman/Fantastic Four #1.
This time, there will be plenty of copies, but you might want to put your reserve down just in case. DC/Marvel: The Amalgam Age Omnibus and DC Versus Marvel Omnibus will go on sale August 6.
