Lovecraft Inspired RPG, The Necromancer’s Tale, Launches on Steam on July 17

H.P. Lovecraft has influenced the works of many works of horror fiction ever since the creation of his terrifying stories and this new game is no exception! The Necromancer’s Tale, a gothic horror RPG full of forbidden magics and unspeakable evils has been released onto Steam!

THE INFLUENCE OF H.P. LOVECRAFT

Lovecraft has had an incredible impact on horror and entertainment in general. His use of threats beyond human comprehension and the slipping of one’s sanity made his stories striking and unique. The feeling of dread of his stories has left an impact on many works, and The Necromancer’s Tale is no exception.

Psychic Software took the tone and style seen in Lovecraft’s works, enhances the overarching story of forbidden knowledge and crumbling sanity. Furthering this tone with an impressive Gothic style. This tone meshes well with the overarching story, coming together into a dark tale of meddling with forbidden forces.

In The Necromancer’s Tale, you play as a noble in 18th century Italy, picking up the dark arts of necromancy. Just as you mingle with the magic of death, you must also navigate relationships with possible allies and enemies. Build up a reputation with factions, and choose your fights carefully.

Your actions will forge your fate, as you master necromancy, while horrors linger in the background.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE NECROMANCER’S TALE

  • Master the Dark Arts: Command the dead and perform chilling necromantic rites to change your fate, and that of others.
  • Turn-Based Combat: Engage in combat using your undead minions and loyal allies. A combat auto-resolve mode is available for players who prefer to focus on the story.
  • Shape Your Story Through Dialogue: Influence allies and enemies alike through branching conversations, manipulation, and strategic deception.
  • A Long-Form Narrative Adventure: Expect 25–50 hours of gameplay, shaped by your choices, side quests, and hidden discoveries.

The Necromancer’s Tale launches in full on July 17, but you can get a taste oday with the free demo on Steam. See if you’re ready to confront the horrors that await beneath the surface of polite society. You can also discuss The Necromancer’s Tale on the PopGeeks Video Game Forum!

I played the demo last night, and I can already feel the tension building in every choice I make. I love how the game doesn’t just throw monsters at you—it makes you feel like you’re slowly becoming one. The dialogue is very well written, and I really appreciate how my choices seem to matter. I convinced one character to join me with words alone, and it felt satisfying. The 18th-century Italian setting also adds a new flavor that I haven’t seen before in games like this. I hope the full version expands on the political side of things too, not just magic and horror.

I don’t usually like turn-based combat, but I like that this game has an auto-resolve mode. That way I can just enjoy the story. The necromancer theme interests me because I’m tired of being the hero in every game. Sometimes I want to play someone who’s in the gray area. I think the setting and the Gothic look of it make it more interesting than just another fantasy RPG.

This reminds me of the tabletop campaigns I used to play with my group, but now it's in game form. I already pre-ordered it because I trust Psychic Software. The trailer had this slow, creepy pace that fits the Lovecraft theme perfectly. I like how they didn’t overdo the horror with jumpscares. It’s more about the feeling of something wrong hiding behind your daily life. The idea of building alliances and manipulating people makes it more than just a monster game. It becomes personal. I hope the branching dialogues go deep enough to support replaying it multiple times.

I think Lovecraft is overused in games, but this one seems like it understands the source better. It’s not just tentacles and madness. It’s about losing your identity while gaining power. I respect that. The noble background for the main character adds a layer I didn’t expect. There’s something poetic about a wealthy person choosing darkness. It makes you think about what people are willing to trade for control.
