KDrama Actors Good at Being Bad. Don’t Hate! Appreciate!

There are Kdrama actors and actresses who deserve rave reviews and high marks for their performances as evil characters.

For example, the actor and actress who played Kang Ji-Won’s cheating husband and so-called best friend in the 2024 Korean drama series Marry My Husband” were both dark, dirty, and dastardly. From the first episode to the last, I could not stand either one of them. Fortunately, I have never met such people in real life. Speaking of real life, I came across posts and comments in social communities discussing how South Korean actors and actresses were receiving hate messages and criticisms for the roles they played.

Dear Public, THAT IS JUST GOING TOO FAR!

It’s understandable to hate the fictional characters who are evil and despicable. But to hate the actor and actress who played the role? Oh my! In this day and age, are there people who have never heard of ROLE PLAY? Be serious! Do you know what kind of psychological torment and fear you can instill in a person with hate comments? Hey! It’s just a job for the actors and actresses! When they knock off from work they want to go home and relax, just like everybody else!

Here are a few examples of what I’m talking about:

“Queen Of Tears” Actor Park Sung Hoon Recounts Hate He Received For His Role | Koreaboo

Destined With You Actor Yura on the ‘Hate’ She Gets For Playing the Antagonist | ComingSoon.net

Bbali Drama. “Korean Actors Who Get HATED in Real Life for Their Roles.” YouTube Video. YouTube, April 25, 2023. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsVdoragmhU.

Marry My Husband”, “Queen of Tears”, “Destined With You”, andThe Gloryhave all been reviewed via PopGeeks. I hated almost all of the characters inThe Escape of the Sevenand they released a sequel, with the same evil people! The Escape of the seven: Resurrection. The actors and actresses who played the despicable characters were very convincing. But not convincing enough for me to want to post hate comments about the actors and actresses on social media.

The K-dramas mentioned above are fairly recent releases. But you can go back and watch some of the Korean dramas released about 20 years ago. There were some GOOD actors and actresses who really shined when it came to playing EVIL characters.

  • Kim Min-Joo played Seo Rin in Tamra the Island (2009) and was ruthless. She was a businesswoman in a man’s world but I’m sure she frightened any man who did business with her. The way she killed her workers for stealing with no fear of punishment by the law, she was ruthless!
  • Kim Hyun-Joo played Royal Concubine Soyong Jo in Cruel Palace: The War of Flowers (2013). Oh man! This woman made my stomach hurt. She has no conscience. She killed a mother and took her baby. She killed whoever she thought was in her way.
  • Ham Eun-Jung played Han Jung / Queen Insu (young) in Insu, The Queen Mother (2011) … UUUGGG!!! This woman was so desperate to be queen, she did anything! And then after she had done all the evil things she could possibly do, she said “Well now we have to leave everything up to the heavens.” The heavens? Are you kidding me? You want the heavens to add on to your evil deeds?
  • Cho Seong-Ha played Kim Cha-Eon in 100 Days My Prince (2018), the father of the crown princess who tried to kill the crown prince … he wasn’t just an evil guy, he was a mean daddy!!

Even though the Korean dramas were released years ago, these bad characters are UNFORGETTABLE!. If you’re a K-drama addict like me, no doubt you can think of many more.

FINALLY … THERE’S ALMOST ALWAYS ONE!! I can’t think of particular K-dramas. I can only say just look for these bad characters. When you watch historical K-dramas, there is likely a mean and nasty head court lady who almost acts like she’s the queen and/or a corrupt court official/nobleman who is evil just for the sake of being evil. ?

Free sleep tired exhaustion illustrationIf someone were to post hate comments for all of these fictional characters, they would pass out from exhaustion!  LOL.

OMG YES! This article speaks to my soul! I can't believe people actually send hate to actors for playing bad guys! Like, come on, have you seen Kim Min-Joo in Tamra the Island? ICONIC villain! She scared the living daylights out of me, but that's exactly why her performance was so amazing! These actors deserve awards, not hate.

A lot of Kdramas don't have good acting but good writing compensate to it, I think Filipino dramas have better acting but lacks production value and good acting.

This makes so much sense. It's called acting for a reason, right? It's the actor's ability to portray someone completely different that makes the drama so captivating. I actually find it impressive when an actor can make me despise their character. It shows their range and talent. Next time you feel the urge to hate-comment, take a step back and appreciate the performance instead.

Apparently some people need acting lessons in real life! Like, seriously, how can you tell the difference between a fictional character and the actor who plays them? Maybe next time someone sends hate to a K-drama villain, we should send them a box of stress balls and a subscription to "Understanding Fictional Characters 101."

I never even thought about this before! I guess I just get so wrapped up in the story that I forget it's all pretend.

Preach! Back in the day, there were some seriously unforgettable villains in K-dramas. Kim Hyun-Joo in Cruel Palace still gives me chills! It's a proof to the acting chops of these stars that they can make us feel so strongly about their characters, even if we hate them. Korean dramas just wouldn't be the same without those good vs. evil conflicts.

Okay, I get the point of the article, but some characters are just SO evil! Like, how can you not hate Queen Insu from Insu, The Queen Mother? She was just awful! But I guess the actress did a great job then, right? ponders for a moment Maybe I can appreciate the acting without actually liking the character...

Wow, that K-drama villain hate is real! It reminds me of Jack Gleeson, the actor who played Joffrey in Game of Thrones. He absolutely nailed that role – Joffrey was about as evil as they come. Unfortunately, some fans couldn't separate the character from the actor and Gleeson reportedly faced a lot of online abuse. It got so bad that he actually quit acting altogether!

Thankfully, K-drama fans seem a bit more chill. Hopefully, these actors can portray their villainous characters with all their might without facing the same kind of negativity. Let's appreciate the amazing talent it takes to bring these characters to life, even the ones we love to hate!

AMEN! AMEN! AND AMEN!! Working in the entertainment industry is hard enough. Actors and actresses can hardly get away from the public eye to get rest and relaxation. They are under constant scrutiny and get beat up over silly stuff like not adhering to the "beauty standards". And then on top of that, viewers are psychologically terrorizing them with hate comments. Don't these viewers have a life? It's really sad when a person can't separate fact from fiction.
