Even though Jurassic Park was pretty much THE movie of 1993, and I was alive and sentient for 100% of 1993, I couldn’t see it. The media had given it a reputation as being “too scary” for children, and though a lot of parents ignored that warning, my mother swallowed it whole. Finally my dad offered to take me on the very last day it was screening in Portland. My mother forbade it. I would eventually see the film, but many years later on network television with ads. Wasn’t the same.
I didn’t get a real chance to see Jurassic Park on the big screen until twenty years later. In 2013 a 3D conversion of the film was made and it was put back into theaters to drum up anticipation for the upcoming sequel Jurassic World. I went that time, and despite already knowing every scene by heart, I loved the experience. The 3D was very well done, especially for scenes like the T-rex in the rain. When she looks at the camera and goes “ROOAAAAAARRRR,” you can feel it.
So now that I’ve received word this version of the movie is getting a re-release itself, I would encourage everyone reading to go. The 3D really does make a difference (to say nothing of the surround sound and large screen).
“There’s truly no better way to see Jurassic Park than on the big screen,” says Jim Orr, president of domestic theatrical distribution for Universal Pictures. “For audiences who have not experienced this beloved classic on the big screen in years, now is the chance to see the original Jurassic Park in 3D,” adds Sean Spencer, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for RealD, who did the conversion in 2013. “This is summertime event moviegoing the way it was meant to be seen.”
Jurassic Park 3D will reappear in theaters August 25, though some locations will get a sneak preview screening on the 24th.
