Jerome Will Return To Gotham

Whether you love it or hate it, it’s hard to deny that Gotham does have some perfectly cast characters in the show. One of the most popular is easily Cameron Monaghan’s Jerome, who has long been speculated to be Joker. The joke was on us though when he died about 5 episodes into Season 02.

But, there is hope, as Executive Producer for Gotham John Stephens has confirmed to Zap2It that Jerome will indeed be reborn in Season 03.

“It is 100% our intention to bring Jerome back.”

However, he notes that to do this, they have to build up to it. Which includes the Joker Cult, which was introduced in Season 02 as well.

“We’re going to be playing it again this year and basically extending the idea of the cult of Jerome,” Stephens explains. “We’re building the architecture for him to come back.”

He further enforces the idea of building to his return by stating that this resurrections storyline could go into Season 04 should the show be renewed:

“You’ll have these underground movements that have started to talk about Jerome and what he represented and how he’s going to come back like in the days of John the Baptist,” he teases during a summer TV press tour panel. “Setting the stage that if there is a Season 4, hopefully we’ll bring that back in a much bigger way and you’ll see these different versions of the Joker myth.”

Finally, much as in all revival tales, the Jerome we get back won’t exactly be the one we remember:

“He plays into the idea of transformation. When he comes back, you want to see that new version,” he says. “That next step forward.”

“Gotham” returns Monday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
