Jason Statham Becomes “A Working Man” March 28

The first trailer for the revenge thriller A Working Man, starring Jason Statham, went live this week. It’s a back-to-basics premise in line with the kind of mindless action movies that once blanketed the landscape 30 to 40 years ago, you know, the kind that usually starred Sylvester Stallone….hey wait, he wrote this thing!

We should have guessed, but Sly’s name is credited on the script, alongside director David Ayer. The screenplay is based on the book “Levon’s Trade” by Chuck Dixon.

Statham’s character, Levon Cade, once served for the military running black ops missions. Eventually he gave up that kind of stressful life for a quiet job as a construction worker. But you know how these types of stories go. Just when he thought he was out, they PULL him back in when human traffickers kidnap his boss’s daughter. He’ll need all his skills to bring her back home. Time to become a one-man army, 80s style!

In addition to Statham, A Working Man stars Jason Flemyng, Merab Ninidze, Maximilian Osinski, Cokey Falkow, with Michael Peña and David Harbour. Supporting roles include Noemi Gonzalez, Arianna Rivas, Emmett J. Scanlan and Eve Mauro. Statham and Stallone also serve as producers alongside Chris Long, John Friedberg, David Ayer, Bill Block and Kevin King Templeton.

A Working Man will be released in theaters March 28 from Amazon MGM Studios.

Finally! A no-frills action movie with Jason Statham doing what he does best: kicking butt and taking names. The premise isn’t groundbreaking, but that’s what makes it appealing. Sometimes you just want to watch a skilled guy take down the bad guys without a convoluted plot or unnecessary twists. With Stallone behind the script and Statham in the lead, this could be a modern action classic.

It’s interesting to see a movie like A Working Man emerge in this era of cinematic universes and endless sequels. This feels like a deliberate throwback to the stripped-down action thrillers of the 80s. Having Stallone write the script and Jason Statham lead the charge is almost a dream collaboration for fans of this genre. I’m curious to see how David Ayer’s direction complements Stallone’s writing style. Both have their strengths—Ayer with gritty realism and Stallone with old-school storytelling.

Statham is one of the few action stars who can still carry a movie like this with pure charisma and skill. The combination of Stallone’s writing and Ayer’s directing should give it a great balance between classic action and modern grit. And with a solid supporting cast like David Harbour and Michael Peña, this has the potential to be both fun and awesome

I find it fascinating that this type of revenge-driven, hyper-masculine action movie is making a comeback. It reflects a longing for the straightforward narratives of past decades when heroes were clear-cut and justice was served with fists and bullets. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, A Working Man could resonate with audiences who feel nostalgic for a simpler era of storytelling.

I wasn’t even aware Levon’s Trade had been adapted! Chuck Dixon is a solid writer, so I’m hopeful they stayed true to the essence of the book. Statham seems like the perfect choice to play Levon Cade, but I’ll be watching closely to see how much they’ve changed for Hollywood. The trailer has me intrigued, but I hope the film does the original story justice.
