SUMMARY: A sharp-tongued public defender and a young man who can hear people’s thoughts form an unlikely partnership to fight for justice.
“I Hear Your Voice” begins with a traumatic event. Park Soo-Ha was 9 years old when he tragically witnessed the murder of his father. He has a supernatural ability. Park Soo-Ha is telepathic, i.e. he can read other people’s thoughts. Although he hears the murderer’s thoughts, he is powerless to prevent the crime. The criminal is brought to trial, but because there were no witnesses except Park Soo-Ha, the court was going to treat it as a fatal accident. However, a young teenage girl, Jang Hye-Sung, comes forward and bravely testifies under oath against the killer despite death threats, resulting in the murderer’s imprisonment. Park Soo-Ha, though just a little child, is deeply affected and vows to find Jang Hye-Sung one day to repay her courage and protect her.
Ten (10) years go by, and Jang Hye-Sung has become a public defender, but she is jaded, pragmatic, and cynical. She treats law as a job, often driven by financial need rather than the idealistic pursuit of justice. Her experiences with poverty and hardship have shaped her into a guarded person who avoids emotional entanglements. Park Soo-Ha is now a high school senior, and one day he tracks her down. He reveals his ability to read minds and offers to help her in court.
Reluctant at first, Jang Hye-Sung gradually agrees to using his mind-reading to give her an edge in cases where facts alone are insufficient. Alongside them is Cha Kwan-Woo, a former police officer turned lawyer, who is idealistic and has moral conviction in the courtroom. The trio deals with various high-stakes cases. Some cases force them to question their beliefs about right and wrong, and others reveal hidden injustices and corruption. The villains have their own backstories and motivations, making them more human and morally complex. But it doesn’t excuse their crimes.
Jang Hye-Sung slowly transforms, and as her cold attitude begins to thaw, she starts seeing the justice system’s flaws and the human stories behind each case. Park Soo-Ha grows even more devoted and loyal because of his childhood promise to her. The dynamic between Park Soo-Ha’s youthful idealism and emotional sincerity, Jang Hye-Sung’s hardened realism, and Kwan-Woo’s principled zeal makes them a great legal team. Practically unstoppable! Almost invincible!
Invincible until the murderer gets released from prison, and he intends to carry out his death threat. This reignites both Jang Hye-Sung and Park Soo-Ha’s psychological trauma. As the danger intensifies, Park Soo-Ha becomes fiercely protective of Jang Hye-Sung and is determined to prevent further injustice. Cha Kwan-Woo is caught in the middle. Personal traumas confront civil justice, relationships between characters, romantic and platonic, need to find resolution, and forgiveness and redemption become key.
Where to Watch: Viki, KOCOWA+, and Netflix
My personal rating is the same as the Viki viewing audience.
“I Hear Your Voice” was set to air 16 episodes but it was so popular they extended it to 18 episodes. This Korean drama has been described as a fan favorite for its gripping mix of law, love, and mystery. According to a review on The Fangirl Verdict, the show succeeds because “everyone has their own backstory and motivations… even baddies get to have their backstories told.”
NOTE: Many of my K-drama reviews are not for recent releases. There are two reasons for that.
The licensing and distribution rights for K-dramas are very strict. Many of the Korean dramas were just made available to a US audience (I’m in the US). For instance, in the last two months of 2025, Netflix added several Korean dramas to its database.
In addition, some of my favorite South Korean actors and actresses that I have come to know, have actually been around for decades. It’s fun to go back and look at some of their earlier work.
Hope you enjoy the reviews.
