SUMMARY: In “Heart Surgeons”, a heart doctor does the unthinkable. There is a VIP patient who is scheduled to receive a heart transplant. All of the doctors in the hospital are ready to take credit and receive high praise for the successful operation, even though it will be performed by two doctors. The OR (operating room) is ready, doctors and other “important people” will be observing the surgery. At the last minute, one of the doctors does not show up. What happened?
In “Heart Surgeons”, the difference between a GS and a CS becomes crystal clear in the first episode. A GS is a general surgeon. A CS is a cardiothoracic surgeon or a heart surgeon. The major difference between them is that a patient in need of heart surgery, particularly a heart transplant, usually has to place their lives in the hands of a CS, cardiothoracic surgeon.
Now imagine you are a patient scheduled to receive a heart transplant. Sadly, another patient must die for that to happen. As soon as the patient, who has permitted their organs to be donated dies, their heart must be removed immediately. Then the heart is kept in a secure container and transported to the OR (operating room) where it will be transplanted into the patient who is still living. Got the picture?
Now imagine that the person in charge of ensuring that the heart gets to where it is supposed to be is one of the surgeons who will perform the heart surgery. It is a joint effort between two (2) heart doctors. One heart surgeon, Choi Seok-Han, and the surgery team are in the operating room, waiting … waiting … waiting … WHERE IS HE? Yeah. Uuuhhh … the other doctor, Park Tae-Soo, hasn’t shown up. They’ve tried calling him but can’t seem to reach him. Nobody knows where he is. One of the doctors on the team said they saw him and thought he was on his way. But where did he go after they saw him? Now it’s a mystery.
The primary heart surgeon on the team manages to reach the other heart surgeon on the phone. Hes doctor is now in full-blown panic mode. He asking the other doctor: Where are you? You’re supposed to be here! We’re performing the surgery together! Don’t you know how important this is?
Oh he knows how important it is. The patient receiving the heart transplant is a VIP patient who will be running for president. The hospital doctors want to show that a person who has received a successful heart transplant can still competently perform the duties of the President. Instead of keeping his health condition a secret, he let the whole country know. This surgery is not just an important moment in the history of heart surgeons, but it will put that prestigious hospital on the map by making it even more prestigious. Not only that but it is a political maneuver that is sure to ensure that the candidate gets elected. WOW!
I guess nobody ever thought that the guy who was responsible for making sure that the heart actually made it into the operating room AND who was also an important doctor on the surgical team … would decide to take the heart and go somewhere else! WHAT???!!!!
What on earth could possibly make a surgeon abscond with a heart that is supposed to be transplanted into another patient? Not just any patient. A patient who happens to be running for President! THIS IS HORRIFIC!
Not saying that it was the right thing to do.
But surely, the doctor must have had his reasons.

My personal rating is the same as the Viki viewers.
After watching “Dr. Romantic”, my interest in medical K-dramas picked up again. “Heart Surgeons” is a two-fer. It’s an interesting medical drama PLUS it’s a great series for fans of Ko Soo (or Go Soo). I am a huge fan of this South Korean actor. I have to say watching this series, my faith and confidence in doctors and hospitals was dashed. Although, “Dr. Romantic” already had me looking sideways at hospitals and doctors. But this series doesn’t put angel wings and halos on doctors either. Thank goodness it’s only fiction. (I hope.)
