Here is YET ANOTHER Hollywood production based on a Sony video game. We told you they were serious about this. But unlike Twisted Metal from a couple days ago, this one’s based on a series that’s still active…albeit very slow to produce updates. A Gran Turismo movie will open in theaters this August.
While the screenwriters really had to rack their brains to come up with a coherent storyline for something like Twisted Metal, they didn’t have to work very hard for Gran Turismo…because they plucked a story from real life. It’s less an adaption of the game (which has no story anyway) and more a dramatization of real events that centered around it. Jann Mardenborough is a professional race car driver who has been in the circuits for the last twelve years. He got into the industry though playing Gran Turismo.
No, really. Mardenborough entered a contest back in 2011 called Gran Turismo Academy. It was a tournament where the winner would get the opportunity to compete in the real-world Dubia 24 Hour race. 90,000 players entered that competition; Mardenborough beat them all, and then he placed third in the real-world event. His career took off from there.
Gran Turismo The Movie stars Archie Madekwe as Mardenborough, David Harbour as his mentor Jack Salter, Orlando Bloom as marketing executive Danny Moore, Geri Halliwell Horner (yes, Ginger Spice) as Jann’s mother, and Djimon Hounsou as his father. The movie starts playing August 11.
