DC Comics has been on a roll since the Rebirth lineup came out. And now, not only are they in the middle of an epic universe-spanning event call Metal, they’re also starting out an epic crossover of sorts between the DC Comics universe and the Watchmen universe via Doomsday Clock. The project is the brainchild of Geoff Johns, who notes in an interview with ComicBookResources.com that he’s very happy with how well the first issue was received and that this is a project that means everything to him.
“I think Gary and I were really happy with the reception. Going into something like this, I think we made it pretty clear how seriously we take this project and this book, and how we really talked about and debated whether we would even do it. When I landed on the story, and Gary got really excited, it felt like a worthy story to tell with these characters. We knew that some people would be skeptical, and they have every right to be skeptical, or think, “Oh, they’re just trying to do a cash grab with the Watchmen characters.” This all came from myself and Gary. It was really a story we wanted to tell once we landed on it. We’ve put everything we have into it.”
Issue #2 arrived today, and dropped major bombshells, including the apparent destruction of the Watchmen world, the crossover going into full swing, and the arrival of the Comedian, who has been thought dead since the original Watchmen comic. With 12 issues in total, the Doomsday Clock event is indeed going to be something special.
