There are definitely some incredible performances in horror that often get overlooked. I'd add a couple more names to the mix that really deserve more recognition.
One standout is
Kaitlyn Dever in "The Last House on the Left" (2009). Although the film itself is a remake of a notorious classic, Dever delivers a heartbreaking and intense performance as a young woman caught in a terrifying situation. Her ability to portray vulnerability while showing strength in the face of horror makes her work really memorable, yet it often gets lost in the discussions about the film's more violent themes.
Another great performance is
Lupita Nyong'o in "Us" (2019). While she did receive recognition for her dual role, I feel that the depth of her performance is sometimes overshadowed by the film's overall concept. Nyong'o skillfully navigates the complexities of both Adelaide and her doppelgänger, Red, providing a chilling yet poignant exploration of identity, trauma, and motherhood. Her commitment to the role, especially in her physical performance and vocal work as Red, is nothing short of extraordinary.
Looking back a bit further,
Angela Bettis in "May" (2002) is another gem. Her portrayal of an awkward, socially isolated woman spiraling into madness is chilling. Bettis's performance evokes a mix of sympathy and horror, capturing the essence of someone who simply wants to be accepted but goes about it in the most unsettling ways. It's a film that many people might not have seen, but her performance is hauntingly memorable.
These performances illustrate how
horror can elevate emotional storytelling through the actors' craft, showcasing just how powerful the
genre can be.
