Which series was the turning point for Super Sentai?

Biorobo featured an AI that responded but Zyuranger's Shogojus were the first instance that the mecha were sentient and responded to the protagonists.

The turning point would be Flashman (big bazooka finisher and 2nd Robot) though in terms of maturity, it was Jetman.

Biorobo did that too; wasn't it visibly shaken up (and scared) when (BioHunter) Silva and Balzion first showed up?

As for the original question, it's hard to pick one definitive series that changed it all so to speak (I think); the various responses here would state that. You would have one series that starts the 6th person trend, the 2nd robot mech or the biggest improvement in storyline or special effects.

You have to look at the impact of the series in the franchise, prior to Flashman, finishers were combination team attacks, but since Flashman rolled out the Rolling Vulcan and Flash Titan, most of the succeeding series (with a few exceptions) just had to have that humongous bazooka as a finisher and a 2nd robot.

My point was not to say that it wasn't there at all before Gao, but that it seems to have been more of a constant since.

I agree. Although I enjoyed Gaoranger, I still see it as the point where sentai decided to go so light and cartoonish, it at times teeters on self-parody. Being a 007 fan, I always liken things to that series. So, the way I put it is that Gaoranger was sentai's entry into the Roger Moore years...

Goranger for starting it, Battle Fever J for the giant robot, Bioman for the bio hunter, Turboranger who used the ideas from Liveman and Maskman to start the beginnings of modern sentai, and Gaoranger because it was used to base how all the sentai from this decade were shaped.
