What Is Megalopolis?

Megalopolis is that cartoon on the Fox network about the society of Greek gods who can’t get along. But it’s also a giant, expensive motion picture about to premiere at Cannes that no one knows what to expect from. This movie exists through the sheer will of Francis Ford Coppola, the legendary director behind Apocalypse Now and Godfather I and II. That’s a track record anyone would kill for. Thing is, though, no director has a flawless track record and Coppola also made Godfather III. And Jack, the 90s movie about an adult Robin Williams playing a young boy after a major growth spurt. Then he just kinda disappeared for thirty years, reportedly spending all that time trying to get his “greatest project” made. Coppola started writing the script for Megalopolis back in 1983. He could never convince any studio to back it, even now, so the picture is largely self-funded, via the fortune Coppola made in the wine business. Since the man is in his mid-80s, I guess you

Roman Empire meets modern NYC? Sign me up! This could be incredible world-building, even if the plot itself is a bit thin. Plus, with Adam Driver on board, there's a chance for some truly captivating performances. I'm willing to overlook some cheesiness for a fresh sci-fi take on a historical period.

New Rome in a modern setting? This could be a fascinating exploration of political parallels and historical echoes. But it also has the potential to be a giant mess. The trailer gives me mixed signals. I'm cautiously optimistic, hoping for a thoughtful commentary disguised as a wild sci-fi spectacle.

Big fan of Francis Ford Coppola, I’m genuinely excited about Megalopolis. The man's previous work, particularly the Godfather series, is legendary. Sure, he's had some missteps like Jack, but who hasn’t? Every great artist has their less stellar moments. The concept of an alternate New York City as a modern Roman Empire sounds unique and ambitious. It’s a testament to Coppola's creativity and determination to see his vision through, even if it means self-funding. I’m rooting for this film to be a success and hope it showcases his enduring genius.

Coppola's gambling big on this one. Will it pay off, or will it be his "Jack" moment all over again? The trailer doesn't inspire much confidence, but hey, crazier things have happened. Maybe it'll be a sleeper hit. Who knows? One thing's for sure, it'll be a gamble at the box office.

I find the concept of Megalopolis intriguing. Coppola is a master storyteller, and his return to the director's chair is noteworthy. Yes, Jack was a flop, but that doesn’t erase his earlier masterpieces. The idea of mixing modern New York with ancient Rome could be a brilliant commentary on our times, highlighting the cyclical nature of history and power. I’m eager to see how Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito bring their characters to life. This could be a thought-provoking film that challenges conventional narratives.

The plot sounds like a fever dream, and not in a good way. The trailer’s psychedelic imagery doesn’t help either. I respect Coppola for his past work, but sometimes, legendary directors don’t know when to let go. This might end up being more of a vanity project than a cinematic masterpiece. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m keeping my expectations low.

Huh, never heard of this movie until now. Looks…trippy. Is it supposed to be funny or serious? I can't quite tell. Maybe I'll wait for reviews before deciding if I want to risk the price of a ticket.

To me, Megalopolis sounds like a fascinating exploration of power and politics through a unique lens. Coppola has always been a visionary, and this project reflects his ambition. Despite the potential for it to be a grand failure, the risk alone makes it worth watching. Films that blend historical elements with modern settings can offer profound insights, and I believe Coppola’s experienced hand will guide this film well. I’m optimistic and excited to see how it turns out.
