WB drops the nuke: Blu-Ray EXCLUSIVE!

It's not fully dependent but it sure as hell does help a lot. Right now the Playstation 3 is the best Blu-ray player out there because for its price you're getting a gaming machine, a computer, and a blu-ray player in one. If you're looking to buy a blu-ray player, PS3 is the way to go for now. The movie studios are the ones that decide the outcome of the war and WB going blu-ray exclusive pretty much ended it.

Now by having WB go blu-ray exclusive, consumers are now out of the crossfire. Blu-ray is the winner and they're going to buy the players and the DVDs. Especially HD-DVD owners who don't have Blu-ray. They have no choice but to go Blu.

And I think you're very wrong here.

Movie studios don't decide crap when it comes to things like this. If they did, all these movies you see nominated for the Oscars, Golden Globes, etc... would be highly profitable blockbusters.

As is, most of those type of movies get released at the end of year because studios know, that the general public rarely gives a crap about them and is highly unlikely to go see those films.

The consumer will decide who wins the format war in both Movies AND games, not the studios.

If it costs consumers less to buy a 360 (and I imagine we'll see a price cut here before too long) and a cheap Blu Ray player then it does to buy a PS3, they'll do that.

Perhaps, perhaps. But at the same time, probably just see a spike in Blu Ray players in general. PS3 is 600 bucks. A standard blu ray player can be as low as 200-250... Based on the difference, which do you think is going to sell more.

PS3 is actually between US$400 and $500 now, depending on what version you get, so I don't see it as much worse than buying a 360 (if that had any blu-ray/HDDVD capabilities). It's really not that bad, considering you're getting virtually a full-blown computer, with a 40-80gb hard drive and all the games to boot.

But yes, if ALL you want is a blu-ray player, I'd buy a standalone player.

This reminds me of when DVD players were still like $300. Ah, the memories...

well the general public only wants to play movies so yeah. Thats where I was coming from.

400 eh? thats a start. now waiting on Square to give me a reason to buy it. That's how it always is with me and Sony.

“Warner Bros.’ move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want,†said Meyer. “The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers.â€
In other (simpler) words, what Warner Bros. is saying is..."WE'RE JUMPING ON THE BLU-RAY BANDWAGON!!!"

And Technology may have already bypassed this debate. As Netflix and others are already proving, the way of the future may in fact become downloading the movies in High def. Thus rendering this debate moot except for which form you want to use for storage.

Physical media is gonna be around for at least another decade and I doubt it will ever truly go away. Digital Distribution will likely eventually take over, but that's a long way off. It requires broadband and the adoption rate in the US is still lacking, not to mention there are way too many areas in the country that don't even have the option of it yet. Other parts of the world are much better off. Until Average Joe Wal-mart shopper chooses downloads over DVD's, DD will just be an additional option for HD content, like HD-DVD & Blu-Ray.

Anyway, it's really looking bad for HD-DVD. The HD-DVD Association cancelled their press conference at CES this week, supposedly the Toshiba rep looked "near tears" during their conference and Phillips accidently leaked that Target stores are going Blu-Ray exclusive.

Happy trails HD-DVD, we hardly knew ya. :disappoin

Like I was telling my buddy Alex a couple of nights ago...I could care less all this inter company competition or what have you. I just want a format that works.
