Watching Blade for the first time

Hiroshi Maeda is the suit actor for Zyuranger's TyrannoRanger AND MMPR's Red Ranger from season 2-Wild Force & Kamen Rider 1 from The First. He's what got me interested in the suit acting in the first place.

Blade really picks up around ep 14, where
Garren grows a pair
. And about halfway through the show, it gets to a "OMG MUST WATCH NEXT EP NOW" pace.

"Picks up"? The show doesn't even start until #14!

Indeed. All that time wasted on Garren being afraid of his own shadow really undercut the idea that he was ever supposed to be a mentor to Kenzaki. But even after that he was so easily duped all the time. It's like one minute Tachibana is cool and awesome the next he's the guy you could talk into hunting for snipe.

That's not a slight against the character so much as an issue with the writing.

But I will say the first 13 aren't without their moments.

Funny cause I'm on episode twelve, also in a week or two, I doubt I'll even remember what happened in the first twelve episodes. I've also started watching Ryuki so forgive my slow pace.

Indeed. All that time wasted on Garren being afraid of his own shadow really undercut the idea that he was ever supposed to be a mentor to Kenzaki.

I thought that sort of fit with the character though. Look how he does with Mutsuki, and even though there was another factor there, you still got to admit that Tachibana makes a mess of the whole "mentor" thing (somewhere, a classic series fan is swearing up a storm about that.) The fact that we find out he has his own sort of "senior" character (who doesn't think very highly of him) underlines the whole fact that Tachibana isn't the kind of "veteren" he wants to be. That's what drew me to the character; he is seriously flawed, and every time he seems to have climbed back up and is the badass hero again, he just slips further, but he never stops climbing.

I dunno, I still think 1~15 are a great arc themselves. A helluva lot is going on in those episodes: BOARD gets destroyed almost as soon as we're introduced to it, Kenzaki becomes aware of Chalice, fights him a few times and by the end of it has actually started on the path towards settling things between them. Garren falls, falls harder, hits rock bottom and then redeems himself (for now!) We see the beginnings of Leangle with the Spider Undead and the bad guys searching for a user/host. Karasuma, considering how much of the series he's absent in, gets a ton to do. And then there's Isaka, who is great in so many ways. And there's some nice fights.

Maybe it doesn't have much to do with the main story of the rest of the series, but it sets things up, and I like having that sort of breathing room. We learn about who these people are before putting them through the grinder, and even then I think Tachibana at least goes through his own crisis/journey in the first 13~15. If there's any real fault in the early episodes, it's that Hajime doesn't come off too well; if you had asked me within the first 10 I'd have pegged Chalice for an out-and-out villain who just happens to have a soft edge. But the latter half of the series gets pretty Hajime-heavy, so I don't mind it. I don't even mind his weird trip with the guitar guy, if only because the monsters in those episodes rule and I liked seeing some random guy just blurting out "Kamen Rider" again.

And to be honest, I can't think of too many other recent Rider series that dove right into the main plot right at the beginning. There's usually this period of getting into the story before really getting on with the story. I found Blade was actually one of the better ones at hooking me early. But I guess some shows will just instantly click with some viewers, and some take longer (if they ever click.) Every series after Blade until Decade took some time for me to really get into them (though I always like the actual first episodes.) They're good beginnings, but I didn't really get interested in things like I did with Blade, not until at least 15~20 episodes in.

On episode 17, it really did pick up. Despite what was already said in this thread I was a tad skeptical as to weather I'd ever gain more interest in this series, but I'm glad I was wrong.
