What an Atrocity. I’ve always loved the old 60’s movie, showing the side of the invasion from the government’s perspective. Now we get this tripe in which Tom Cruise runs in a straight line for 2 hours. Full of holes and idiocies. The aliens hit NY with an EMP blast…ok, everyone gathers around the hole,….ok, Then we suddenly see a guy with a cam-corder..Wait what about the EMP that JUST happened. Then everyone stands there while the thing powers up it’s death ray….
And the scene where they attack the Ferry…..oh no! aliens are coming…lets all run unto the slow moving boat. I swear, My friends and I were saying with our geek and gamer knowledge. “That thing took like 5 minutes to power up that death Ray….thats 4:59 in which we would have been running. Or the Ferry scene. Bad guys in front of us, slow boat behind us…lets go to the side!!! But apparently common sense is not Tom Cruise strong suit in this film. Nor is his son’s who seems bound and determined to run headlong into a fire-fight. Which he does…sorta, we see tanks and choppers going over a hill, we hear a battle, but at no time do we ever get to actually see this epic event. Add to the continues Scientology reference and you have one craptastic film.
After the atrocity that was A.I. I said that Stephen Spielberg would have to do a REALLY good film to redeem himself in my eyes. He did that with “The Terminal†This film doesn’t change that….but it doesn’t go anywhere else. The worst part of the film is that apparently Boston has Zero strategic value as days after the aliens attack and start terra-forming the planet….His Ex-wife’s parents house still appears to be completely intact amongst the ruins, Now I could accept a pristine building in the middle of devastation if it had been set in Baltimore, but not Boston.
I did however love the reference that the Japanese in Osaka had managed to take down a couple, while no mention of how is ever made it’s pretty obvious that either A) The Japanese launched Manzinger or B) The Aliens where using a mecha Design the Japanese had already toyed with so they knew the weak point. I also will never understand how this movie is billed as the most expensive movie ever. With very little in the way of sets. Less CGI than a Star Wars film, and just a few rubble filled streets, Tom Cruise’s contract must have demanded a daily bath of Caviar to Force this film to beat out Water-World and Titanic for the top spots…..ARRG! I’m just mad now…. At least I can remind myself that I saw Batman Begins last week, And that movie was 99% Geek Proof.
