The theatrical debut for Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is imminent: it happens in less than a month, and distributor Crunchyroll has started selling tickets as of today. It will screen in select theaters for one-day-only, as part of Crunchyroll’s monthly Anime Nights theatrical program. The full title is Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: A lonely dragon wants to be loved, and it is NOT a compliation film — it’s a fully original story that continues what has been established in the two TV seasons of the series. The lonely dragon is Tohru, who Kobayashi saved from a perilous situation in the first episode. Because of her act of heroism, Tohru insists she must “pay off the debt” by becoming Miss Kobayashi’s personal maid. Kobayashi herself is an average office drone who once led a normal, bland life – until this happened to her. Tohru can take on human form, but not completely — she’s still got horns and a tail — but fortunately few seem to notice. The premise has generated two seasons of comedy and now a full movie. Things are about to get serious. though. Here’s the film synopsis: Miss Kobayashi, Tohru, Kanna, and Iruru’s peaceful lives are shattered […]

Dragon Maid was one of the few I enjoyed because of how warm it feels. Seeing that the movie is about family and reconciliation makes me want to see it. The father-daughter conflict between Kanna and Kamui sounds touching. I hope it ends with understanding, not just fighting.

This show has always mixed humor and heart, but this movie seems to focus on Kanna’s connection with her father, which could make it deeper. I think the idea of Harmony versus Chaos in the dragon world will let the movie explore what it means for Tohru and Kanna to live among humans. It is interesting that Iruru might uncover a hidden force too. I hope it gives her more development because she joined later in the series.
