The Voice guy has passed away

Remember, Don LaFontaine wasn't the first "In a World . . . " guy, that was Hal Douglas, who's still alive. He's the one with the older-sounding voice.

Nevertheless, Don will sadly be missed.

Actually, Don LaFontaine did claim to have invented the "In a world" catchphrase. Not sure whether we'll ever know who actually came up with it first.

In any case, any fan of LaFontaine should definitely check this out: back in 2005, he appeared as the celebrity guest on the "Not My Job" segment of Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, the NPR news quiz show. It is absolutely hilarious, especially if you've ever listened to NPR-- he gives his own special treatment to a bunch of NPR shows. Check it out here. (The audio segment uses RealPlayer.)
