The Underappreciated Genius of Final Fantasy XI's Storytelling

Final Fantasy XI often gets overshadowed by its single-player siblings, but honestly, its storytelling is a hidden gem. The way it builds lore across multiple expansions is stellar, especially in areas like "The Rise of the Zilart" and "Chains of Promathia." You really get a sense of history and character development, especially with figures like Elvaan hero, Kam'lanaut, and the intricacies of the Scions. Plus, the fact that it introduced us to such a rich, interconnected world makes it stand out in the franchise. The gameplay may seem clunky compared to modern titles, but the community-driven aspect and the grand narrative arcs are worth getting into. What do you think, does FF XI deserve more love for its narrative depth, or is it just nostalgia speaking?

The storytelling in Final Fantasy XI has its moments, but I'm not sure I'd call it "stellar." While the lore in expansions like "The Rise of the Zilart" has some interesting ideas, it often feels convoluted and hard to follow. Kam'lanaut is a neat character, but the overall character development can get lost in the grind. The gameplay issues definitely hold back the narrative for me; it can be a slog trying to keep up with the community-driven aspects when you're frustrated by the mechanics. Nostalgia plays a huge role in how people remember XV's story, but I think a lot of it just doesn't resonate the same way as the single-player entries.
