The Shift in Crime Dramas: Are We Seeing a New Era?

I've been watching some recent crime dramas like "Only Murders in the Building" and "The Night Of," and it's got me thinking about how the genre has evolved over the last couple of years. There seems to be a shift from the classic procedural format to more character-driven stories that get into the psychological aspects of crime, rather than just the “whodunit” aspect.

Shows like "Mindhunter" and "The Undoing" really seem to explore the impact of crime on individuals and communities, while also giving us richer character arcs. I appreciate that these newer series seem to be less about the action of solving the case and more about the emotional weight it carries for everyone involved.

Do you guys think we're entering a new era for crime dramas? What are some of your favorites that embody this shift? Are there any classic crime shows you think did something similar before it became a trend?

Absolutely, the shift you’re talking about is super fascinating! "Only Murders in the Building" nails that balance of humor and emotional depth, and it’s cool to see how crime can weave into relationships and community dynamics.

I think "Mindhunter" is a game-changer too, especially with its slow burn and focus on the psychological profiling of killers. It really makes you feel the weight of the stories, rather than just rushing to the next plot twist.

As for classic shows that did something similar, I’d say "The Sopranos" tackled crime through a psychological lens, exploring Tony's struggles in such an intimate way. I’m curious if you see any other classic shows that laid the groundwork for this new wave?
