The Phantom Is Getting His Own Video Game

King Features and Australian game studio Art Of Play have announced they’re now working together on creating a video game based around one of the world’s oldest superheroes: The Phantom. Predating Superman by a year, he was introduced via Lee Falk’s newspaper comic strip in 1936 — a strip that’s still running today. What’s The Phantom’s whole thing? Well, there’s a long-standing rumor that the jungles of the African country Bangalla (don’t look it up, it doesn’t exist) are haunted by a vengeful ghost. This ghost aims to punish all evildoers who operate in or around his territory. What no one has figured out, even to this day, is that The Phantom is just a normal guy (well, as “normal” as anyone who lives in a cave and only ventures out to punch people can be), and he’s “immortal” because the Phantom is a long family tradition. Each Phantom is the son of the previous one — they just all look the same. The Phantom the strip follows, Kit Walker, is the 21st man to be Phantoming. The Phantom's story is set in 2030. Just a few short years away! As a kid, I was so pumped about the future. I dreamed of flying cars, jetpacks, and maybe even a real-life Phantom swinging through the city. But here we are, still stuck in traffic jams and waiting for self-driving cars. I guess we'll have to wait a little longer for the future we were promised. Maybe by 2030, we'll at least have a decent Wi-Fi connection on the moon.

It's a bit disappointing, to be honest. I remember watching The Phantom and thinking, "Wow, this is what the future will be like!" But as we get closer to 2030, it's becoming clear that our reality is a bit more mundane. Still, there's always hope. Maybe some brilliant inventor will come along and surprise us all. Or maybe we'll just have to settle for a really good virtual reality experience.

Pre-ordering might be worth it just for the soundtrack and artbook. December 2025 feels so far away though!

The Phantom! Man, that takes me back to reading the comics with my dad. Never thought I'd see him in a video game. Might be a fun way to introduce my own kid to the character. Co-op mode with Diana could be a cool bonding experience.

Another licensed video game? Don't these usually turn out kinda meh? Hope Art Of Play can do the Phantom justice. 15 levels seem a bit short, but hey, at least you get a horse and a wolf to help out. Pre-order bonuses sound neat, might wait for some reviews before diving in.
