You hit the nail on the head with Sonic vs. Mario and Cloud vs. Sephiroth! Those rivalries definitely add layers to the story and keep players invested. I think one that's often overlooked is the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero in the Mortal Kombat series. Their conflict adds so much depth to the lore and really helped shape the franchise's identity.
