Another Summer Games Done Quick is now part of history. The charity speedrun generated mass cash in record time, reaching the one million mark by Thursday and ending Saturday night with over $2.4 million for Doctors Without Borders. I followed most of the stream live, and many of this year’s runs were better than usual. If you missed most of SGDQ and would like to catch up, the YouTube archive is always there, but you probably don’t have a literal week’s worth of time to see all of it. That’s why, in the service we’ve performed since 2015, we’ve pared the list down to what we thought were the most interesting runs of the bunch. Check these out… KungFuFruitCup and her orange pigtails have been a signature sight at GDQ for the last few years. Very rarely does she participate in a speedrun itself, and never one so…strenuous. Beat Saber is a VR game requiring a constant workout, and even more so when you’re playing custom unofficial maps that have been modded in. The Silly Block, despite its midnight start time, has gathered quite a following both within the convention halls and out of it. But it was the run […]

What a lineup this year. I came in expecting just another fun GDQ, but AEW and Rose and Camellia completely threw me off. I was laughing, amazed, and even a little moved. I love that GDQ allows for both skill and absurdity. The Silly Block is always my favorite. It reminds me that games are allowed to be weird. Also, props to whoever came up with BOWLOUT. That was ridiculous and perfect. I’m honestly glad stuff like this exists. It breaks up the tension of all the frame-perfect runs. More weird games, please.

I think it’s important to highlight how much physical effort was involved in the Beat Saber run. A lot of people assume speedrunning is just sitting and playing, but this showed it can also be physically demanding. KungFuFruitCup deserves credit not just for pulling it off, but for doing it in a way that stayed engaging for viewers. VR speedruns are underrated. I hope GDQ continues to showcase more of them in the future.

I usually only watch the Zelda and Metroid runs, but this time I stayed for Silly Block and was pleasantly surprised. An Airport for Aliens Currently Run By Dogs might be one of the most bizarre things I’ve seen, but it made me smile. It made me realize that speedruns don’t always have to be intense or super competitive. Sometimes it’s just about having a good time and sharing laughs with the community.

I’m glad SGDQ included A Plumber For All Seasons. Most of the time, Mario hacks are just “how hard can we make this?” but this one looked like it was made with love. The visuals, the music, the level design — it all felt polished. I watched the entire run, and it felt like a new official Mario game. If you haven’t seen it, I think it’s worth prioritizing. It was relaxing and fun, which isn’t something I usually say about a Mario hack.

I didn’t know Wayforward made Rose and Camellia until now. That surprised me. I’ve always associated them with more polished action games, not...slapping duels between fancy ladies. But I loved every second of that run. It was so over-the-top, and the commentary was hilarious. Honestly, it’s runs like that which make SGDQ so unique. They give space to games that would never make it onto other big platforms. I hope the organizers never lose that spirit.
