Final Fantasy IX is often seen as a love letter to the series, but its influence stretches far beyond its charming aesthetics and engaging story. The blend of whimsical character design alongside deeper themes of identity and belonging paved the way for modern RPGs to explore similar narratives. Games like *Xenoblade Chronicles 2* and *Persona 5* have definitely drawn inspiration from FFIX's approach to character progression and emotional storytelling. Plus, let's not forget about its innovative gameplay mechanics, particularly the Active Time Battle system and the unique skill system that encouraged exploration and experimentation. As we see more RPGs adopt a narrative-first approach, it's clear that FFIX's legacy is not just nostalgia; it's a foundational pillar for future developers.

The character progression in FFIX is definitely a standout, especially how it lets characters grow through their unique abilities. I think the Active Time Battle system is a classic that's aged better than some modern systems, though I still prefer the more strategic turn-based combat from earlier entries. While I appreciate its charm, I sometimes feel like some of the deeper themes could have been explored even more thoroughly.
