Earlier this month a few screenshots were released for The Electric State, the feature being produced through Netflix that adapts Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 graphic novel of the same name. Thanks to the publicity machine that is NYCC 2024, we now have a full trailer for this thing, and…. I might be alone in this but I was hoping for something a bit wackier, given what we learned about The Electric State two weeks ago. The movie goes off on a different path from the book, and is set in an alternate 1994 where goofy-looking animatronic robots have risen up and displaced humanity as the leaders of the world. It’s in this situation that we find Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown), an ex-musician on the hunt for her brother. One day a smiling yellow robot shows up and implies he knows exactly where Bro is. Thus the journey begins. This could still turn out to be a comedy, but the trailer takes itself far too seriously, even though we know The Electric State stars both Chris Pratt and a rogue robotic Mr. Peanut. The robots in the trailer are really impressive. I wonder what kind of technology they're using to make them look so realistic. I'm definitely interested in learning more about the movie. I hope the lead actors are not love interests.

Wow, this movie looks incredible! I’ve been a huge fan of Millie Bobby Brown ever since Stranger Things, and pairing her up with Chris Pratt and Anthony Mackie? That’s a killer cast! The concept of an alternate 90s where robots once lived among humans but are now exiled sounds like such a fascinating setting. It’s giving me major Blade Runner vibes mixed with the 90s aesthetic, which I’m all in for. Plus, I love when directors like the Russo Brothers bring their action-packed vision to sci-fi.

I’ve actually read the graphic novel this movie is based on, and I’m really curious to see how they adapt it for the big screen. The original story is a haunting mix of nostalgia and dystopia, so I’m hoping they capture that melancholy tone, especially with the robots in exile and Michelle’s search for her brother. Millie Bobby Brown has the emotional range to handle that, but I’m a bit concerned about whether the film will prioritize action over atmosphere. Still, the Russos are capable of pulling off something visually striking, so I’ll give it a chance.

I just watched the trailer, and it looks interesting, but I’m not entirely sold yet. I like Chris Pratt’s work, especially in Guardians of the Galaxy, but sometimes these post-apocalyptic stories can be hit or miss for me. That said, I’m a sucker for anything that has cool robots, and with a cast this stacked, it’s hard to imagine it’ll be boring. I’ll probably watch it once it’s out on Netflix, but I won’t be counting down the days or anything.

I love the idea of an alternate 90s! As someone who grew up in that era, I’m really curious to see how they blend that retro-futuristic aesthetic. It was such a unique time — the rise of the internet, but still a very analog world in a lot of ways. Throw in some robots and civil wars, and you’ve got a cool twist on the decade. Millie Bobby Brown is a great choice for the lead, but I’m really excited to see how they use all those amazing voice actors.

This actually feels like the kind of stuff people were worried about during the Y2K scare! Back then, people genuinely feared that computers and technology would go haywire, leading to mass chaos and breakdowns of essential systems. The idea of robots rising up, or technology turning against us, was a real fear for some, and The Electric State taps into that same anxiety but pushes it further into an alternate reality. It’s like they took those Y2K doomsday scenarios and gave them a sci-fi twist with exiled robots and civil wars. It's funny how that paranoia from the past is still influencing stories today!
