The Best Old-School Video Game Power-Up EVAR

OK, so over the years, there has been one very consistent theme with video games that tends to make playing them just that much easier: Power-Ups. Nothing pleases a gamer more than finding that treasured item that allows them to eradicate all enemies on screen, or regain all health when you're backed into a corner and all seems lost. So, with that said, this poll is for the old-school gamers (or the new school guys who play some old school stuff every once in a while). What was the best power-up in your opinion? State your reasons why, as well.

Also, if there is a particular one that isn't on this list, go ahead and mention one.

Super Mushroom just cuz the Tanuki Suit wasn't a choice. lol

Contra's Spread Shot was the best because it allowed you to take out multiple enemies from far away, which allowed you more time to dodge enemy shots (if they managed to take any shots at you).

The good thing about those particular ones is that you could absorb a hit and keep on going. The only difference between the two is that with the Super Mushroom, you had to find a specific ?-Block, whereas with Rings, you can collect up to 20 of them back and carry on with clearing an act or zone.
