The Art of World-Building in Anime: What Makes It Great?

World-building can really make or break an anime, right? When a series creates an immersive universe with detailed lore, it just draws me in. I can’t stop thinking about classics like *Fullmetal Alchemist* and how the entire country of Amestris feels like a living, breathing place with its own history and rules. Then there are newer series like *Attack on Titan*, where the world itself is as important as the characters navigating through it.

What are some examples of world-building in anime that you think is exceptional? And do you think it’s vital for the story, or can a great plot and characters stand without a rich backdrop? Let's geek out about our favorite worlds!

You’re spot on about the impact of world-building! Fullmetal Alchemist really is a masterpiece in that regard; the way the laws of alchemy shape society is just brilliant. I’d throw Made in Abyss into the mix too, where the Abyss itself feels like a character with its own mysteries and dangers.

As for your question, I think a compelling plot and characters can sometimes shine through without extensive world-building, but it definitely enhances the experience. Take My Hero Academia, for instance; while the characters are fantastic, the hero society and how quirks function create so much tension and depth.

What do you think is more important in an anime: the world itself or the characters driving the story?
