David Goyer Writing New Superman Movie: The Man of Steel

After just hearing about the news on the finalists in the running for Captain America, we're just now getting word of a superhero on the other side of the fence at DC Comics as Latino Review got the exclusive scoop that David Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) will be writing the new Superman flick which now has the official title of The Man of Steel. They also confirm what we have suspected for a while: Brandon Routh will not be returning and Bryan Singer will not be directing. Goyer is now the second person from the Batman camp to join the revamp of Superman after we heard Chris Nolan was shepherding the new film.

Their source goes on to divulge that "Goyer's story involves Luthor and Brainiac. It is not an origin and assumes audiences already know about Lois, Clark, Jimmy and Perry. I know the Daily Planet is struggling due to the internet. And I know it sets up a huge Kryptonian mythology." Finally, it sounds like we'll get the contemporary Superman we've all been waiting for and DC Comics will have more than a rich guy in a utility belt to hold the rest of Marvel's arsenal of kick-ass superheroes at bay. It's still a very long way off for sure, but I absolutely can't wait to see what Goyer and Nolan can do with Supes. Are they on the right track?

I don't think we have enough info to say one way or another. Only a few months ago there was all the talk about wanting to make Superman "dark" :rolleyes2: which is the same point-missing bullshit the WB has been pimping for about 20 years now. Make him dark! Don't make him fly! Give him throwing blades! Dress him in all black and spikes! Give him guns! Make him grim! Make him mean! Make him post 9/11 depressed! ..it's just bullshit.

If there is anything right here I'd say not going over the origin is probably a good thing. Besides if there's any particulars of that which need to be covered to help establish anything they can always do it in flashback or as a prolog. If it were me I'd show Krypton explode and then follow the rocket through space as the opening title credits roll and then end that with the rocket landing on Earth and being found by the Kents. Cut to 20 years later at the Daily Planet and go!

I really like that we're finally talking Brainiac. This has been loooooong overdue. I remember as a kid thinking for sure that Superman III would be Christopher Reeve versus the cool looking chrome skull version of Brainiac from the Super-Powers Collection. Instead we got Richard Pryor on skis. :laugh: :disappoin

I kind of wish Luthor wasn't in the mix though. I mean for movie audiences with the exception of the Phantom Zoners and unless you want to count Nuclear Man all they've ever seen Superman battle is a bald guy in a business suit with a rock that makes Superman nauseous. I think they could afford to keep Luthor out of the spotlight for a movie or two. Not even saying don't have him there but don't have him as the principal threat.

As much as Superman is overdue for a good villain fight I hope they don't forget the other aspect in which Superman shines and that is the super-rescues. Moreso than punching a guy this is cool action of Superman. Yeah he's powerful but when lives are in danger on a massive scale his challenge is to figure out how to apply his powers in th e best way to save everyone. A excellent example of this I think is the earthquake stuff from the first Superman movie. That is an awesome action sequence and not a single punch was thrown.

It ain't the 1970's anymore. I love that movie too, but I love Superman more, and I think he deserves to be the biggest hero again, but that hasn't been true since the moment "Batman" hit theatres.

It ain't the 1970's anymore. I love that movie too, but I love Superman more, and I think he deserves to be the biggest hero again, but that hasn't been true since the moment "Batman" hit theatres.

Yeah I know it's not the 70's that wasn't the point of what I was talking about. I never said don't have him fight a villain. I was merely saying that Superman doing super-feats and rescues is not something that should be completely abandoned in favor of just beat-em ups.

As for Begins crew being involved I'm mixed because I liked Begins well enough but I hate DK.
