I like this show for some dumb reason -- it falls into the awesomely bad/guilty pleasure slot, though. It's pretty cheap and repetitive, but I think it can be more entertaining than any of Saban's shows. It has more of a sense of humor about itself, and pokes fun at some of the PR cliches that are carryovers from tokusatsu. (Sam's henshin brace being stuck on his arm, which he initially is embarrassed by and tries to hide; Amp's always changing henshin phrase, including the surprising-for-an-American-kids-show "I'll show you mine if you show me yours!") I recently rewatched this show and thought it had a short shelf life, though -- I got bored with it by about the time the idiot surfer showed up and they were recycling some of the Gridman footage.
I kind of liked the cast, though. I remember being surprised at the time that I actually recognized cast members like Matthew Lawrence, the kid from Parker Lewis Can't Lose, and Tim Curry, unlike all of the nobodies Saban gets. (Funnily enough, Lawrence is probably the worst actor of the cast, though.) My favorite character was Malcolm -- Glen Beaudin was good, although he could overdo it with that mysterious pseudo British accent he did. I think the goth, cyberpunk fan take on the character was neat for a show like this. And I think the cast gelled more than it seemed any of the PR casts ever did.
It would be nice if this release had some extras. I'm curious what the Malcolm, Jennifer, Tank and Syd actors are up to now. They've vanished!
