Last summer IDW announced a crossover between the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Godzilla, which is only the latest in a line of such crossovers, but has the potential to be the biggest (literally). The first issue will be released in November, but IDW just sent us a preview of the first five pages, as well as some never-before-seen variant covers. Also, we just found out why the TMNT are meeting Godzilla. This comic takes place in an alternate world where the origin of the Foot Clan can be directly traced to kaiju. Whatever their purpose originally was, the Shredder has now taken control, and plans to use the kaiju to create a new mutagen…imagine a fifty-foot-tall, fire-breathing Super Shredder. You can see now why the Turtles would need to get Godzilla on the phone. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla is being scripted by Tim Seeley, creator of Cassie Hack (there’s another character the TMNT need to meet) and illustrated by Fero Pe, who’s drawn a lot of these crossovers. [Whale Mutant Kun]

I am curious how the Turtles will even talk to Godzilla. He does not exactly do team-ups. The idea of Shredder turning into a fifty-foot-tall monster is hilarious but also terrifying. If that happens, maybe even Godzilla will see him as a threat worth stepping on.

 

[Teenage Mutant Ninja Frog]

This crossover reminds me of the older TMNT vs. Batman event that surprised everyone by being actually good. If Seeley captures that same tone—serious but fun—it might reach both TMNT and Godzilla fans. I also hope the variant covers reflect the scale difference between the characters because that visual contrast is part of the fun.
