Spaceballs 2 Could Finally Happen

We at Popgeeks feel very fortunate that Mel Brooks is still with us at 97, AND that he’s still making things. He’s joked in the past about making a sequel called “Spaceballs III: The Search For Spaceballs II” but no serious talk about a follow-up to his Lucasfilm satire has ever happened…until now. Sounds like Brooks has a deal with MGM and its parent company Amazon to produce Spaceballs 2 (which might not have the previously mentioned title, given how a reference to The Search For Spock may not be so fresh anymore). Josh Gad, who broke out on Broadway with The Book Of Mormon and is best known as the voice of Olaf in Frozen, is also attached to the project. Gad is writign the script alongside Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Josh Greenbaum has been hired to direct. The real question is, is Gad actually IN the film? Any casting decisions are unknown at this time. Perhaps he’ll replace John Candy’s role as Barf. Star Wars, of course,

Spaceballs 2? More like Spacefails 2, am I right? The first one was a cheap knock-off, a pale imitation of Star Wars. Mel Brooks? The guy hasn't made anything funny since... well, ever. His humor feels stuck in the past, like some dusty relic from a bygone era. And this whole sequel thing? Just reeks of Hollywood desperation. They can't come up with original ideas anymore, so they gotta milk old franchises for every penny. Josh Gad? Seriously? The guy voices a goofy snowman for Disney - what makes anyone think he can capture the magic (or lack thereof) of Spaceballs? This whole thing is a disaster waiting to happen. Save your money, folks. There's nothing to see here except a shameless cash grab disguised as a comedy sequel.

The original thrived on the specific landscape of 80s sci-fi. Star Wars has evolved so much – can they find the right balance between nostalgia and freshness? Josh Gad's a talented guy, but is he the right fit for the wacky Spaceballs world?

I liked History of the World Part I. Do, I’m willing to give this a shot. Can’t wait to see the merchandising.
