If it seems like there are a lot more homebrew and indie games coming out for the Game Boy, that’s because there are. Software like GB Studio has made it possible to develop for the 8-bit platform quickly and with minimal programming knowledge, leading to a new second life for the 90s handheld. While most of these projects go physical through crowdfunding campaigns, this one won’t. Bitmap Soft must feel confident enough in Sofia the Witch: Curse of the Monster Moon to give it a publishing deal right away. Preorders for physical carts will go live later this week and remain open the next four weeks; two weeks later the game will start shipping. Sofia The Witch feels a lot like the classic Game Boy games of yore. Every 500 years, a lunar eclipse brings forth the Monster Moon, turning animals into monsters. It’s Sofia’s job to make sure that change doesn’t become permanent and use her magic to turn all her animal friends back to normal. She can only do it one creature at a time, though, and only through four distinct worlds in order: Forest, Water, Desert, and Cloud Land. The type of magic that Sofia can conjure […]

A brand new Game Boy Color game in 2024? Now that's what I'm talking about! This "Sofia the Witch" looks pretty sweet - reminds me of all those classic puzzle platformers I used to play as a kid. Turning animals back into friends with magic? Sign me up! The two-spell mechanic sounds interesting, especially with the whole color-coding thing. I might have to dust off my old Game Boy or grab an emulator to check this out.

Huh, a physical release for a new Game Boy game? That's pretty rare these days. I gotta admit, "Sofia the Witch" has me intrigued. Four unique worlds with secrets to uncover? Hidden bosses? Multiple endings? This sounds like a game that could take a while to complete, which is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm not sure I need all the bells and whistles of the Collector's Edition, but the standard version with the manual sounds good. Gotta love those physical manuals!

Game Boy Color? Is that like a really old, outdated phone or something? I've never heard of it. I mean, it's probably just some low-res, pixelated thing that you have to hold up to your face to see. Why would anyone want to play that when they can just get a high-powered gaming console or a smartphone with a million games? Seems kinda pointless to me.

This "Sofia the Witch" game could be perfect content for my retro stream! Cute graphics, interesting premise, and multiple endings? Sounds like there's a lot to unpack here, which would be great for viewer engagement. Plus, the whole "Monster Moon" thing seems like it could lead to some hilarious moments. I can already imagine the chat going crazy whenever I encounter a monster version of a cute animal.
