Six (6) Korean Dramas Based On or Inspired by the Hwaseong Serial Murders

Before, I just thought they were normal crime dramas, but knowing they are tied to real events gives them more weight. I remember how Signal showed the frustration with the police system, and now it makes more sense why the story focused so much on mistakes and missed chances. For me, that part felt very real even before I knew the background. I think it is good that dramas use fiction but still reflect real problems, because it helps people understand history without being too direct or heavy. I am also curious about The Scarecrow because that detail about marking crime areas sounds very unusual. I never heard of that before. It makes me wonder how people lived with that kind of fear at the time. I might check that one next.

For me, Memories of Murder is still the most powerful one connected to this case. Even without knowing all the real details, the film already feels heavy and realistic. After learning more about the actual investigation problems, the story makes more sense. It explains why the characters feel frustrated and lost. I think films like this stay popular because they do not try to give easy answers. They show how complicated real cases can be. That makes it different from typical crime stories where everything is solved clearly. It leaves a lasting impression because it feels unresolved, just like the real case was for many years.
I've seen various comments by reviewers, and many say "Memories of Murder" is the best K-drama about this topic.

The real case was horrific. You can tell by the various K-dramas that the real crime left a mental imprint on the minds of the people in the whole country that can not be erased. Unlike America, where, sadly, we had good investigative techniques, and it still took years to find the criminal. The USA has had so many cases that they even include teaching about serial killers and copycat crimes as part of the course in universities.
