Single Girl Only Sentais - Problem or No?

The problem for me with "ditzy" female Rangers is that it's usually done to make them look cute/sexy, as if that's their only function in the show - she may not be useful but hey, she's hot and that's what matters! I am not suggesting that every female character should be Einstein. I think heroines like Yellow Buster (who is less "smart" than Ryuji or Hiromu, but the show still treats her with respect) and MegaPink (intelligent but "book dumb" and can't be bothered to study) can be done well.

It's not about being Einstein; but, like you said, it's always problematic when female characters are mainly used because of their hotness, and not much else; and when you have two girls, its often twice the cute/sexy stuff; and it's also problematic with human looking villainesses as well

It's also not so bad if the whole team is pretty dim i.e. the Go-ongers, Goseigers, the main three Hurricanegers

Yeah; but in Hurricanger, there were the smarter Gouraijers and Shurikenger, and, in Goseiger, the team may be dim, but Hyde was shown as a smart one, and Alata shows development; however, Eri and Moune don't change much. Even Go-onger has Blue, Balck and Gold who are supposed to be smarter.
Frankly, I'm really surprised you're able to enjoy Go-onger and Goseiger, because the female characters are really shown as complete idiots, and with huge use of the "she's hot and that's what matters" stuff.
In Carranger and Kakuranger, who are also a "team of idiots" sentai, at least, there are Ninjawhite and Yellow Racer who are the voices of reason (and Ninjawhite being the sole girl, but also the leader)

While it goes without saying that this is all subjective, just chiming in that I disagree on it being problematic for the villainesses. Villains who aren't the big bad are often played for laughs or without tons of depth in general, to me including sexuality in there is not a problem. But of course, sexuality is one of the least agreed upon topics ever.

I do agree it's problematic if the main characters of the show lack substance though.

Two women on the team hasn't been considered a risk in the past, so I don't think the gender topic ties into the "back to basics approach" topic.

It seems to be a separate whim of the producers/suits, since many of the popular successful sentai shows have had two females.

Not Ohranger. Or Go-Onger (except in toy sales). Or even Goseiger.

Plus there are some popular successful sentai series that only has one girl as well.

Goseiger still outperformed Go-Busters, and had higher ratings than Gekiranger.

All "popular, successful Sentai series with just one girl" came before Sentai ratings hit the deck at Gekiranger. Kyoryuger may turn that around, but we don't know yet. Ideally however Toei won't come to think that less female presence = success

The fact that Akibaranger has a second season, and has a lot of female presence (Nobuo is almost the only regular male character), I think that Toei isn't gonna think so.
Besides, the most successful post-Boukenger sentai series is the very female rich Shinkenger.

There's a reason why Akibaranger is like that: the target audience is completely different. It won't affect how Toei does regular Sentai these days.

Anyway, the most successful Sentai of the 2000's (Gaoranger) had only one girl. It's a moot point, Gekiranger and Go-Busters didn't underperform because they were lacking girls.

Well, yes, it's aimed at adult male otaku and the girls in it are mostly there for fanservice (and to induce comic reactions from Akagi bless his awkward little heart)

And it came after Timeranger, which underperformed, and also had just one heroine. It doesn't seem to have much effect although with Kyoryuger it seems pretty obvious Toei wanted to cut down on female characters so they could push more toys

I remember in the last thread we had on this subject that Lynxara mentioned the factor of suit acting but I'm not sure I want to bring up that one again, some people get touchy at it being pointed out that a dude is inside the suit of their fave Sentai girl ...

I'm just saying, success of a certain series has nothing to do with whatever they have one girl/woman or two or more girls/women on a team.

No, it doesn't; but although I like Kyoryuger so far I'm hoping that if it's a hit Toei won't decide to go back to just one girl a year to keep profits up
