The closest we've had in Sentai so far was probably Abaranger. AbaRed's character had many of the same problems as Mako (being too emotional and compassionate) but his arc did show that being a single parent is tough.

Anyway, now that we're OT in an OT thread, did anyone else notice that the backstory in Abaranger is exactly the same as Super Mario Bros. The Movie?

Jannu was a formidable threat, it wasn't like she was just a minor nuisance. Asuka spent a good part of those earlier episodes getting his ass kicked by her. And Mahoro wasn't weaker than Asuka, she wasn't an underling, she was his equal, a soldier who grew up and fought alongside him in the war on Dino Earth. She was probably stronger than Asuka, even. It wasn't like Asuka pushed her around because he felt emasculated.

That's been made fun of since Abaranger debuted. At least there wasn't a scene where Nakadai had to trust the fungus.
