Mike Flanagan swaps the pea soup for a blood-soaked murder case in The Exorcist: Martyrs, and Hell may be the last stop on the trail. The devil is in the […]

Flanagan tackling the Exorcist franchise is wild, especially with someone like Scarlett Johansson in the mix. I can totally see her bringing a nuanced take to a role like this, especially since the original had such iconic performances. This could add a fresh layer to the mythos, and I'm here for it.

I like that Flanagan is not trying to copy the original movie sound and scares. Skipping Tubular Bells on purpose shows he wants his own identity for this story. The detective angle with old serial killers connected to demons sounds more interesting than another haunted house plot. Scarlett Johansson playing a cop instead of a possessed person is a fresh choice too. I just hope the pacing stays tight because crime plus horror can become too long if they try to explain everything. Exorcist III is one of my favorite horror movies because it felt smart and slow burn, so if this follows that style I am already interested. March 2027 is far but I will remember this one.

Okay so demons jumping from killer to killer across history? That is actually a cool idea for once.

I respect Flanagan a lot as a director but I am still not sure horror needs another Exorcist movie. The franchise already has enough entries and most of them get forgotten quickly. Believer did not land well with people from what I remember. Maybe this one will be different since the writer is more skilled, but I feel tired of studios reviving old horror names instead of creating something original. Scarlett Johansson is a great actress though, so at least the acting part should be solid even if the story does not fully work.

The cast list alone makes me curious. Diane Lane, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne, that is a serious group of actors for a horror sequel. Usually horror franchises do not get this level of acting talent attached. It tells me Flanagan wrote something that actors wanted to be part of, not just another cheap scare movie. The small detail about the son being raised by the grandmother while the mother investigates a demon case adds some emotional weight too. I am interested in how they balance family drama with the religious horror elements, since that mix can go wrong easily if they focus too much on one side.
