San Fransisco says no to happy meals UNLESS..

At the same time, though, there are a lot of parents who just don't care and will give in to an annoying kid who doesn't know any better than to eat nasty fast food.
Thats no excuse. It's their fault then. McDonalds doesn't shove food down there throats. If we just keep accepting people's faults and not have them take responsibility for them we won't solve anything.
Keeping kids healthy is a fine thing and all but it gets ridiculous. In NJ they stopped serving Sodas in school because it "made kids fat" and they passed legislation to ban their sale during lunch time.

Honest to God, it's hard to get upset at this kind of move. I mean, it's legitimately not a good idea to try and control people's eating habits, but parents are so irresponsible nowadays. I grew up fat, unhealthy, and HATING myself because my parents never took care of me. Someone has GOT to stop parents from doing that to their kids, somehow.

The minute you let government and politicians control your life, you have lost..

This reminds me of the video game thing. Yeah there are violent games, but it's not the job of the politicians to dictate who can or can not play a certain game. It is up to the parents, and the people that play the games.

This isn't just about getting rid of certain kinds of food. Do you think these people are going to just stop at the "we are doing this for the kids" line? They already proved they want more. Like I said, look at the trans fat ban in New York. That isn't just for kids, they are telling EVERYONE what they are allowed or not allowed to eat.

If we let them start telling us what we can or can not eat, where does it end? Next thing they will be telling us what we can't read, watch, play, etc.

Haha, yeah, I know, I'm not advocating this at all. I just find it rather odd that we have to pick between these freedoms or letting young kids get obese because their parents were too negligent to be proper parents and just say no and enforce proper nutrition.

If violent video games were churning out generations of killers, then yes, it would be the government's business to step in and stop that. The difference between this and video games is that there's zero evidence to support the idea that video games create killers, and a lot of evidence to support the idea that toy-based happy meals create fat kids.

If those fat kids go on to have chronic health problems and become a burden on the state's coffers because of it, then yeah, that's the state business and the state's responsibility to try to keep that from happening. The same reasoning is used to justify in cigarette taxes and public smoking bans. I mean, unless you want to advocate for the idea that the state should allow people who make poor life decisions to just rot and die (which some people do).

And don't give me that "slippery slope" BS. The government already has its hand in the food industry, in USDA inspections telling people they can't sell meat that's past its prime or infected. That stuff is equally done to protect individuals from their worst instincts (buying cheap meat because they can) and I don't hear anyone complaining about that.

There is evidence that video games cause kids, mainly young boys, to act more violent. Do your research if you don't believe me.

The state has no business dictating how we live our lives. I agree with you that kids need to be taken care of, but are you willing to give up your own rights for this? Like I said, it starts small and then they want to step in and take more and more. Public smoking bans were something that was voted on. By the people. Not the same. People that make poor life decisions made them on their own, why should we bail them out? You think the state gets magical money to take care of those people? No it comes from taxes. From what you are saying you think it's ok if some one were to get fat, smoke, drink, and do all kinds of things bad for them BUT the state should bail them out with free health care.

Telling some one they can't eat something because it's poisoned, out of date, or infected is very very different than telling people they can't eat a certain kind of food(yeah I know this is off topic from the mcds thing but he brought it up). Do you think they are the same thing?:redface2: There is a difference
between cheap meat and infected/bad meat. I buy cheap meat all the time. You know why? Because it's cheap.

Honesty this isn't shocking or even that out there, this is just an example of the crap at happens at the local political level. Seriously some the stuff that local governments pass are way weirder than this, we are only hearing about since it is happening in a major city.

Very true. Some of the stuff that doesn't get publicized is probably a lot nuttier than this.

What do you expect from a city that elected Nancy Pelosi. I'm a 49er fan,but no way do I like the far left leaning city.
