Ryu Tendo vs. Guy Yuuki

Forever Knight

Eye See You
I'm currentley rewatching Jetman. It's been a long time since I've seen it and I forgot alot about the series which is a shame on my part.

I really wish I had subtitles for Jetman, it's such a great Sentai series.

My question and poll is Who is really better Red Hawk or Black Condor?. For a good part of the series it seemed they were fueding for Kaori/White Swan's heart. If you saw the series you know the outcome.

I find what happend to Guy in the end really fucking stupid on the writers part. So for 50+ episodes he battles an evil space empire but is taken out by 3 lowlife assclown thugs. C'mon.

But anyway, who did you like better and who did you wish ended up with that bitch Kaori?.

Gai, of course! What's great about Gai is that he could have been a really obnoxious "lone wolf" type that we've seen go wrong in so many tokusatsu shows, but the actor elevates it to such much more than that, making Gai sympathetic. Tendo's a good guy and all, but...his actor made him at times come across as sometimes clueless. It was nice that he was a responsible Red and all, but he just sort of ignored all of the emotional happenings around him, off in his on world, it seemed.

I liked Kaori, but she really didn't deserve either. Gai was too good for her, although her richy-bitchy parents (and Kaori herself, initially) thought otherwise, but Gai was really prepared to give her anything in the world. But she blindingly followed Ryu, who...didn't seem to pay much attention to her! So the moral came off as more that the rich are scum and can get anything they want, even if it's a person! She pretty much bought Ryu, is how I see it.

I've covered why Gai's death sucks, but I at least like that he was taken down by Naoki Oofuji, the Condor suit actor. Plus, people forget this crucial bit -- Gai was sucker-stabbed! Of course he would have been able to beat the crap out of that guy, but the coward stabbed him when his back was turned. Even Vyram and the sadistic Radeige had more scruples than that! What I find strange, which I didn't think of until watching the show again recently, was that Rie pretty much "killed" Radeige in the same manner -- sucker-stabbing him when he was turned.

Here's a shot of Gai actor Toshihide Wakamatsu and Condor suit actor (and Gai killer) Naoki Oofuji from the interview in the Jetman DVD booklet.

Yeah I've been noticing this about Ryu now while rewatching the series.

I'm still not sure why he let Guy slap him around like a bitch in the earlier episodes either. If anyone did that to me I would **** him up.

Where's the "I REALLY need to see Jetman!!!" option? Without that, I can't vote. (Though I will make the point that Red owns all. ;))

Voted for Gai, because as far as I'm concerned there's no contest! I agree with Shougo, Ryu was cool, but he often comes off as sort of stodgy and very by-the-book early on (although that's partially since he's the only one who was "supposed" to be part of Jetman I guess) and then gets sort of wrapped up in his own world later in the series, with the whole Rie thing.

I'm in the minority, but I always sort of liked the irony of Gai's fate- that of all the things to finally kill him, it's something totally out of left field (that's Inoue for you). But on the other hand, it is still a pretty sucky way to kill off such a great character, and I think it would have been more effective if Gai hadn't been so likable, because by the end of the show, he's presented as being a better person than he was at the beginning, and you come to care about him a lot more than you did at first. I found it to be like that, anyway.
