It's Judgement Time!
I bought the entire collection recently. It includes all 86 episodes plus the first two Robotech movies.
Over the past two days I've been watching the first season (36 episodes in length). I remember watching Robotech on Toonami and some when I was really young in the 80s. I didn't remember much though. The Robotech I truly fell in love with and remembered was the second season, with Dana Sterling and Zor.
If I had to describe Robotech Season 1 in a phrase:
It is the most mind fucking and emotionally tearing experience I have faced in my life. Watching the series with a friend, we were both at the edge of our seats with anxiety; sunk into the cushions of the couch with despair and depression; and clenching our fists in anger hoping Minmay would die a horrible death.
This anime rattled the cages of our deepest emotions. The triangle between Lisa, Minmay, and Rick was probably the most infuriating and yet, the most rewarding anime experiences I've felt in a long time.
Getting down to the technical side - Despite this being such an old anime, it felt like a new one. The animation was good and so were the voices. The characters draw you in and you care (or hate them) before too long. Rick Hunter starts off as a confident young man who somehow becomes confused and emotionally torn between his love, Minmay, who seems to grow distant from him ever since he got close to her. This causes him to ignore the people who truly love him, like Lisa Hayes. What results is a fighter pilot hopelessly dragged between loving Minmay and Lisa. Back and forth he goes from deciding he's done with his first crush to leaping back in her arms while a torn Lisa witnesses it.
Watch Robotech. How children watched this back in the 1980s without crying their damn little hearts out is beyond me. The series starts off as a strong space fighter anime with alien plots of intrigue and danger then twist off into an emotional ride featuring love between fighters and pop stars.
Damn this anime, I love it so. I just hope I can still appreciate the second season as much after watching this.
