Rediscovering the Magic of Practical Effects in Film

With all the advancements in CGI and digital effects, it feels like practical effects have taken a backseat in many modern films. I recently rewatched "Jurassic Park," and I was blown away by how impactful the practical dinosaurs still look compared to some of the more recent all-CGI creatures we've seen. There’s just something magical about the tangible presence of real effects that cannot be replicated by computers.

I wonder if audiences are starting to crave that physical reality again? Films like "Mad Max: Fury Road" showed us that practical stunts and effects can create a visceral experience. Even in superhero flicks, some of the best action was grounded in real effects, creating a sense of weight and consequence.

What do you all think? Are there any films that you think used practical effects brilliantly, or do you feel CGI has its place in modern cinema? Let’s hear your thoughts!

I agree practical effects bring something special that computers cannot match. There is a physical reality in practical work that makes scenes more powerful. Films like Fury Road proved you can do big action with real elements and it pays off big time.

Rewatching Jurassic Park made me realize how much we lost with too much CGI. Those dinosaurs had real weight and you believed they could eat you. Modern CGI creatures often look too smooth and perfect. Fury Road is another great one with all those real car chases. Practical stuff just gives the movie more energy and makes the action feel dangerous.

Practical effects have a kind of honesty that CGI often misses. You know the actors are reacting to something actually there instead of pretending. That makes the performance better too. Sure computers can create crazy things but they rarely give the same weight or presence. I miss when movies used more real builds and stunts.

Yeah I agree audiences might be getting tired of everything being digital. Practical work brings a physical reality that computers struggle to copy. The details look sharper and the movement feels natural. CGI is useful for some big scenes but when everything is green screen it starts to feel fake after a while. Real effects just have more soul.
