Some people think kids’ horror is simple, but I think it’s harder. You can’t go too far, but you still have to keep tension and surprises. R.L. Stine does that better than most. I’ve studied his pacing and how he ends chapters — always with a hook. I write short horror stories for teens now, and I owe a lot of my style to what I learned reading his books growing up. Seeing him in person is something I thought would never happen. I’ve already marked June 22nd on my calendar. I’ll be front row at the panel, notebook ready.
