New On Digital: American Dreamer, Starring Dinklage And MacLaine

Plaion Pictures has announced that American Dreamer, a new dark comedy starring Peter Dinklage as a new homeowner who gets more than he bargained for, is now available on digital. Dinklage plays Dr. Phil Loder, a low-level economics professor who has always wanted to own a home yet has never been able to afford it. That changes when he runs into a childless old widow, played by Shirley MacLaine, who is willing to sell him her entire mansion for practically nothing. It’s amazing! It’s a dream come true! Wait…is there any catch to this? Almost assuredly, but that’s something Phil will have to find out for himself. It feels like it’s been a WHILE since I’ve seen MacLaine show up in anything. Thirty years ago she was so culturally relevant that parodies of her were always appearing in the cartoons I watched, with her crunchy beliefs in auras and chakras used as a bottomless well of comedy. Where did she go anyway? Why’d she pick THIS small-time, digital-exclusive picture to reappear? Perhaps the moon was in the right phase — I dunno. American Dreamer also stars Matt Dillon (The House That Jack Built), Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon), Danny Pudi (Community), Rebecca Olson (Kung Fu) and Kimberly Quinn (The Starling), so it’s not lacking for talented actors. It was directed by Paul Dektor and produced by Theodore Melfi, Kim Quinn, Paul Dektor, David Ginsberg, Toyo Shimano, Kevin Root and Dinklage himself. You can find American Dreamer now on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Virgin Movies, Sky Store and Rakuten. Did it deserve a theatrical run? You be the judge.

So… Hollywood legend returns in a straight-to-digital film, and no one’s talking about it? That’s a bad sign. Either the marketing failed, or the movie just isn’t good. I like Dinklage, but this feels like one of those projects that just quietly disappears.

People complain about straight-to-digital releases, but honestly, it’s great for accessibility. Not everyone can get to a theater. Digital platforms allow smaller, quirky films like this to find an audience. If the movie is good, it’ll get word-of-mouth success.

MacLaine back in action? I remember when she was in everything! From Terms of Endearment to Steel Magnolias, she had such a presence. It’s odd seeing her in something small like this, but maybe it’s a hidden gem. I just wish she’d been given a bigger spotlight for her return

I used to respect Peter Dinklage, but after what he did to Snow White, I can’t support him anymore. His comments led Disney to replace the dwarves with random "magical creatures," taking away roles from seven little people actors. Then, after backlash, they awkwardly added CGI dwarves instead. So in the end, real actors lost jobs because of his stance. It feels like he wants to be the only little person in Hollywood, and that’s unfair. Representation should mean lifting others up, not gatekeeping opportunities. Because of this, I have no interest in American Dreamer or any project he’s in.
