FF7 Naoki Hamaguchi : Please dont make offensive and disrespectful mods for the PC release of Final Fantasy VII rebirth

Final Fantasy VII (1997): Mercenary Cloud Strife joins eco-terrorists to fight a megacorporation draining the planet’s life force. Its cinematic scope, Sephiroth, and 3D leap made it a global phenomenon. AKA Final Fantasy 7, FF7, FFVII

Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, has one simple request before the game launches on PC this January 23: keep it classy.

In an interview with the Epic Games Store, he said:

“While the team has no plans for official in-game mod support, we respect the creativity of the modding community and welcome their creations. Though we ask modders not to create or install anything offensive or inappropriate.”
Translation: Please don’t turn Tifa into a tank engine or replace Sephiroth with Shrek. We’re begging you.

If this sounds familiar, Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida made a similar plea before that game’s PC launch. Naturally, the internet listened very respectfully. (By respectfully, I mean it was a complete disaster.)

Mods are great, don’t get me wrong. They’ve brought us things like Elden Ring co-op and custom expansions for Fallout 4. But let’s face it: the second modding tools hit, someone’s going to put Cloud in a maid outfit and make Barret throw glow sticks instead of bullets. Also we know eventually Pornographic mods will exist, this reminds me when makers of overwatch begged people to stop making porn out of Tracer, Once you put videogames on PC the characters have 2 faith, be modded both bad and good or be extracted for an illegal cgi animated porn.

If you don’t want your characters turned into SpongeBob or showing up in some bizarre NSFW mod, then maybe don’t release your game on PC. Modders have too much free time and a limitless supply of creativity—good and bad. It’s just the nature of the platform. Asking the internet to "keep it classy" is like yelling into a void. People are going to do whatever they want, especially when they’re bored or looking for attention. If you’re that concerned, stick to consoles where you have more control over the experience.

I see modding as an extension of art. It’s fascinating how people can take a game and interpret it in new ways, even if the results aren’t always tasteful. That said, I think there’s value in respecting the artistic vision of the developers, especially for a game as iconic as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Modding can coexist with respect, but it takes effort from the community to strike that balance.

Honestly, I think Hamaguchi’s plea is falling on deaf ears. As soon as a game hits PC, the modding community is going to go wild, and no amount of begging is going to change that. It’s just the reality of the internet. People will always push boundaries, and let’s face it, weird, offensive, or just plain bizarre mods are part of the culture. The best the developers can do is maybe encourage more creative, non-destructive mods, but expecting people to behave themselves? That’s asking for too much.

I’ll admit, I’m kind of looking forward to seeing what the modding community comes up with for Tifa. Let’s just say I wouldn’t be surprised if some fans decide to take her, uh, ‘assets’ to the next level. Classic internet, right?

Let’s be real—the modding community is absolutely going to troll Hamaguchi. It’s almost a tradition at this point. The second a developer says “please don’t do X,” someone’s already halfway through making a mod that does exactly that. I’m not saying it’s right, but it’s inevitable. The internet thrives on pushing boundaries, especially when there’s an audience for it. Honestly, instead of asking people not to troll, they should just brace for impact and focus on showcasing the mods that enhance the game

I’m sorry, but the idea of Sephiroth as Shrek is kind of hilarious. I know it’s not what the developers want, but the absurdity of mods like that is what makes PC gaming so fun. There’s definitely a line, though, and I hope people avoid crossing into disrespectful or offensive territory. Keep it funny, keep it harmless, and let people enjoy the memes.

I get why the developers want modders to keep it classy, but honestly, I don’t mind harmless mods that poke fun at the game. I think it’s part of the culture at this point. However, when mods get inappropriate or disrespectful, that crosses the line. It’s like people forget there are creators behind the characters they’re messing with. Modding should be about enhancing the experience, not diminishing it. That’s where I stand.

I understand the request, but let’s be real—there’s no way people won’t mod the game in ridiculous ways. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see Cloud in a maid outfit just for fun? It’s harmless as long as it’s not offensive. I think the developers are asking for the impossible, but at the same time, I get why they want to preserve the game’s tone. I just hope they’re prepared for the inevitable.

Look, I understand their concern, but let's be realistic. Mods are inevitable. Trying to stop them is like trying to hold back the tide. Instead of begging, maybe they should focus on providing robust tools and support for the modding community. That way, they can at least guide the direction a bit and maybe even encourage some of the more…creative…expressions
