You might be forgiven for assuming the NES got a port of Montezuma’s Revenge. Originally released by board game manufacturer Parker Brothers for a variety of systems in the mid-80s, it was a platformer smash BEFORE Mario made the genre cool — but by the time the NES achieved dominance, Montezuma’s Revenge was no longer being sold.
Instead, most people played the game on an 80s computer like the Apple II, ZX Spectrum or C64. Not only was it one of the most popular games for computers at the time, it was easy to bootleg, so everybody had it whether they paid for it or not. Now Normal Distribution LLC has picked up the rights to the game and corrected an oversight. Montezuma’s Revenge is coming to the NES very soon!
The setup is simple: you’re an explorer probing the depths of an Aztec temple. There are over 100 screens per level, which was a LOT for its time period. Depending on the version, you might have to deal with Montezuma himself at the end, in the form of a giant living...
