Well yeah, it's kind of obvious. I'm not 100% certain, but I believe it was the same animation studio that did Transformers The Movie.

The concept and character designs are indeed American, but the animation, sound FX, BGM, and singular Mighty Orbots robot design are Japanese. ABC and MGM commissioned this series right out of Japan, through Tokyo Movie Shinsha (TMS). ABC was the first network to commission such a series right out of Japan.

The collective Mighty Orbots design was based upon the design for the titular robot of TMS's Godmars.

Yuuji Oono did the music, while Tom Chase & Steve Rucker (Dexter's Lab, PPG) did the theme song.

It's a Japanese/US coproduction anime. Simple as that.
