Marvel Cinematic Universe Discussion Thread

I love the MCU, but they need to get some ethnic diversity, the Avengers and the upcoming movies are full of white people. The only people of color are in supporting roles (War Machine, the guy in Thor, etc.). I would love if they cast a major hero like Doctor Strange as a minorty

Yeah because changing the race of an established character is a great way to bring about "ethnic diversity".. I mean it's not like there are heroes of other races than white that could be used....:redface2:

So far all the comic books Marvel have chosen to adapt star white protagonists, so the only way to get any diversity is to do some recasting. I would love a Black Panther or a Luke Cage movie, but they don't have any plans for them right now. And lets be honest here, all the truly iconic characters (both DC and Marvel) are white, because they were created back in the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's when the idea of a Superhero who is a minority wasn't something the public was able to deal

So would I recast a character like Doctor Strange as a minority? Hell yes. Because it is the only way to get some diversity in the Avengers right now

Recasting a character as a minority is considered by some to be just another kind of racism, similar to affirmative action. When there are readily available non-White characters to use (such as Black Panther) there's no reason to change an existing character.

However much I personally dislike that things are this way, if you make a character a different ethnic group then you change things about the character. Implications of both what they say and what is said to them change. Potentially how they grew up and with whome changes.

Now if it were me and I were looking to make a movie about an ethnic minority that has popular appeal it'd be a Mile Morales Ultimate Spider-Man movie. But thanks to Sony Pictures, Marvel can't do that. Movie rights are kinda nutty.

IMO forcing "diversity" as you are wanting is more racist and insulting.
